Writer Guidelines for contributing to The Patagonia Journal


The Patagonia Journal is designed to educate and assist outdoorsman in understanding the fishing and hunting opportunities that exist in Argentina and Chile; specific methods used in the pursuit of those activities; and providing sufficient information for readers to make educated decisions about their own adventures. We encourage the authors to be creative and come up with articles that both entertain and educate. Each new publication of The Patagonia Journal may contain a Featured Destination article, and one or two secondary Feature Articles related to a specific fly fishing or hunting adventure, techniques for a specific species, fly patterns, casting technique or presentation, hunting techniques, equipment, or conservation issues. It may also contain a Photo Essay if a suitable submission is available. Once a query has been selected, we will notify you of your position.

We prefer that you focus on a specific topic and cover it completely. “Featured Destination” articles that focus on a specific location, river, lake, lodge etc, that fall within the geographical area of Argentina or Chile are encouraged. Avoid using excessively long anecdotes. Brand Reference: Avoid advertising in an article. When referring to brand names and services, please ensure that they work within the context of the sentence or paragraph. All brand references deemed unsuitable will be removed from the article prior to publishing.

Featured Destination Article:
- Article should be a minimum of 500 words (not to exceed 1500)
- A selection of at least 20 photos should be supplied.
- Please include a wide variety of images (angles, content, creativity)
- Images should directly pertain to the content of the article
- Photo captions should be supplied for each image and should illustrate the specific activity in the photograph as it pertains to the article content.
- Please provide any special requests for photo credits

Secondary Feature Article:
- Article should be a minimum of 500 words (not to exceed 1000 words)
- A selection of at least 10 photos must be supplied.
- Please include a wide variety of images (angles, content, creativity)
- Images should directly pertain to the content of the article
- Photo captions should be supplied for each image and should illustrate the specific activity in the photograph as it pertains to the article content.
- Please provide any special requests for photo credits

-PHOTO ESSAYS We are always looking for photo essays profiling specific topics, species, and locations within Argentina and Chile. Digital Photographs should be dramatic, vivid, innovative, and original. Images should be arranged with the idea of telling a complete story. Photo captions should be descriptive. The photo used for the web magazine primary panel may be selected from the selection of photos provided for the photo essay. When you submit a photo essay, photo captions should include pertinent details regarding:
- the species of fish or game animal

- the time of year and location
- any unique information about the area
- any unique information about fishing or hunting techniques for the species, especially as it pertains to the area or time of year
Requirements are as follows:
- A selection of 30 or more digital photos in JPG which adhere to the photo guidelines listed below.
- Please include a wide variety of images (angles, content, creativity)
- Images should directly pertain to the content of the article
- Photo captions should be supplied for each image and should illustrate the specific activity in the photograph as it pertains to the article content.
- Please provide any special requests for photo credits

High quality digital images are mandatory for submissions made to The Patagonia Journal. Determination of the quality of an image will be based on clarity, angle, content and relevance to the submission it accompanies. Image quality and content are the determining factors on whether an article will be published or not. Please do not send poor quality images.
Photo captions: MUST be included for each image. Corresponding image file names must be accurately recorded for photo caption reference. Image Format: Provide a mix of horizontal and vertical images. At least 5 of the submitted images must be in vertical format. The Patagonia Journal and Sterling Adventure Group, LLC assume no responsibility for the loss of solicited and unsolicited material.

- Photos must be taken at your cameras highest resolution. We prefer images shot in JPG wherever possible.
- Minimum DPI must be set at 300 - no exceptions.
- Prints and slides are not accepted.
- Do not manipulate digital images prior to submission. Images that arrive manipulated will be rejected.
- Please include the processed JPEG file for each image.

QUERIES

If you have a story, or a story idea, please send an e-mail outlining your article idea before submitting a manuscript. We read and respond to all queries, but expect at least a three-week wait for that response. Selected editorials may be published at a future date to correspond with seasonal relevance or needs of the The Patagonia Journal. All submissions are on speculation, even if you receive a positive response to a query. We urge multiple submissions, but if you sell a piece we're holding, please notify us immediately. First time writers should include a brief biography (approximately 40 words). Send all queries, correspondence, and submissions to:   by e-mail.


  Submissions

  Once we have confirmed your article for publication, we will provide the details of your submission deadline. A complete article submission should include the finished article (electronic version only) in a current version of Microsoft Word, a selection of the required, quality digital images in JPG format, and photo captions. Your name, address, telephone number and email address should appear on all submitted materials and in the upper left corner of the first page of the article. Proofreading:
- Where possible, please use gender neutral language.
- Avoid the use of clichés.
Formatting:
- Font style: Arial
- Font size: 11pt
- Line spacing: 1.5
- Single space after all punctuation. This includes end punctuation and colons.
- Paragraphing: Two strokes of the return key and then indent three spaces
- Do not use page numbers, headers, or footers
- Do not mix fonts and font sizes
The Patagonia Journal appreciates, and will consider unsolicited submissions; however it is not responsible for unsolicited submissions or for the safety of submissions not in our possession. 

Photographs for Gallery publication

The Patagonia Journal appreciates, and will consider all unsolicited photograph submissions for the Readers Gallery; however it is not responsible for unsolicited submissions or for any unauthorized use that may occur from anyone outside of Sterling Adventure Group, LLC and The Patagonia Journal. We reserve the right to decline any photographs not deemed suitable by our editing staff. By sending unsolicited photographs for publishing in the Patagonia Journal, you release all commercial rights to those photos.
